First graders complete an author study of Lauren Child, British author, former lampshade designer, and now TV writer. Her Charlie and Lola books are such a big hit every year in the library! We always read "I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato" to kick off our unit and discuss healthy eating choices. Then we move on to "I am too absolutely small for school" and "I am not sleepy and I will not go to bed." We never forget "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Book?" and we sing the old Disney tune to go along with it.
Lauren Child uses collage, flat-on-flat glued together photos, wallpaper, and textures, to create interest. We discuss collage and how it helps the reader stay interested.
We created our own collages in the style of Lauren Child! Students were asked to come up with their own 'imaginary name' for a common food that Lola would not eat, as Charlie tries to convince her to eat using this new imaginary named food.
